thank u, next

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

A lot of people seem to be confused on the meaning of Ariana Grande's new music video for her latest single, "Thank U, Next." The 25 year old pop star meshes four notable chick flicks from the early 2000's in her late 2018 music video. She includes Mean Girls, the Original Bring it On, Legally Blonde, and 13 Going on 30. But why these particular movies? Is it just because of the girly culture of them all, or is there a significant meaning? I'm here to break it down for you.

The female superstar came out with a documentary series on youtube showcasing all the behind the scenes of what went down during the making of the video. In Ari G's "thank u, next (behind the scenes - part 1)," Jennifer Coolidge gives her take on being in the music video. "It's a strong woman's message that you don't have to destroy yourself over men. You can date men and when it goes wrong, you benefit from the hardship but you move on and it's just like okay, you don't have to hang out in it ... you don't have to feel crappy about ta relationship that's gone wrong." Coolidge's input helps give us insight and realize the consistent theme of all the movies.

All the movies dealt with a hard break-up and required the leading female to rise up and move on. No wonder why Ari felt it was more than necessary to bring them all back and remind us girls to pick ourselves back up when things go south.
